Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground Beef (lean or 80/20)
  • 1 large Green Bell Pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 8 slices Provolone Cheese
  • 4 large Hoagie Rolls
  • 1 tbsp Butter or Olive Oil

Equipment

  • Large Skillet Cast iron or non-stick works well.
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Heat the butter or oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until they are soft and slightly caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and no pink remains. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Stir the cooked peppers, onions, and minced garlic back into the skillet with the beef. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Toss well to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal piles in the skillet. Place 2 slices of provolone cheese over each pile. Cover the skillet with a lid for 30-60 seconds until the cheese is completely melted.
  5. Toast the hoagie rolls if desired. Use a wide spatula to scoop up each cheesy beef portion and slide it into a roll. Serve hot.

Notes

For an even creamier texture, stir in 2 tablespoons of Cheez Whiz or cream cheese before adding the provolone slices.
