Ingredients

For the sweet potato base:
  • 4 large sweet potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
For the pecan topping (optional):
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
For the marshmallow topping (optional):
  • 2 –3 cups mini marshmallows

Method

Boil the sweet potatoes
  1. Place the peeled, cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Boil until fork-tender, usually 15 to 20 minutes. Drain well to remove excess moisture.
Mash the potatoes
  1. Transfer the drained potatoes to a mixing bowl and mash until completely smooth. Using a hand mixer creates an extra silky texture, but a simple masher works well too.
Prepare the filling
  1. Add melted butter, maple syrup, brown sugar, eggs, milk or cream, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir until the mixture becomes glossy, creamy, and uniform.
Transfer to a baking dish
  1. Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
Make the topping
  1. For the pecan crumble: Mix brown sugar, pecans, flour, and melted butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  2. For marshmallows: Keep them aside until the end of baking.
Assemble the casserole
  1. If using the pecan topping, sprinkle it evenly over the sweet potato base before baking.
  2. If using marshmallows, add them during the last 10 minutes of baking to prevent burning.
Bake
  1. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the casserole is set and the topping is golden.
  2. If using marshmallows, bake 20 minutes first, then add marshmallows and bake for an additional 10 minutes until lightly toasted.
Serve warm
  1. Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving so the topping sets slightly.

Notes

  • Always drain boiled sweet potatoes well to avoid a watery filling.
  • Use real maple syrup rather than pancake syrup for authentic depth.
  • Allow eggs and dairy to reach room temperature so the filling mixes smoothly.
  • Adjust sweetness based on preference; sweet potatoes naturally add sweetness.
  • For a richer base, substitute half the milk with heavy cream.
